Why am I asked to increase weights with every set?
All of us are the gym are advised to increase weights in every set. Ever wondered why? Perhaps never questioned the trainer too. As most people I have seen. Blindly follow instructions without questioning the Very important “WHY?” Behind everything you are asked to do and didn’t know why you are doing it.
The reason we increase weights in every set is the Proprioceptor Receptivity.
The intention when taking weights is to break muscle so that it can repair to be stronger. However Proprioceptors could be a barrier or a support to this process.
Let’s understand a little about Proprioceptor Receptivity.
The first set of biceps you hit at 25lbs is the first hit to the biceps that day. This breaks muscles and also activates the proprioceptors (receptors in the muscle that are now armed with handling 25lbs for a few minutes after that, knowing that that’s the least you will hit it with)
So if in the second set you once again take 25lbs, no muscle will break. (The muscle is already prepared to deal with 25lbs since that’s what you hit it with the last time)
So this time if you take 35lbs.. now that what’s going to wake up the muscle and cause it to break because the muscle was prepared for 25lbs..not 35lbs! You see?
No brainer is 45lbs in the third set.
Guess where 35lbs in the third set will keep your muscle?
That’s right. No change.
Encash on the Proprioceptor Receptivity by harnessing the muscles trained in the previous weight pushed to be able to push more weights and break more muscles months next set.
